5260 needs cache
Just more of the same old same old these past few weeks. I fixed up about 6 Mac SE/ImageWriter combos for donation, and have 6-10 more to do before I run out of working printers. At the school I've been upgrading early PowerMacs to run System 8.6, Accelerated Reader, and Internet where appropriate.
I'm still surprised at how slow the 5260 all-in-one PowerMacs are. I've speculated in the past that it is due to lack of cache chip. They typically have a 120 MHz 603 chip, but the 5200/75 model (which comes with a cache) feels so much faster. If we had a broken 5200 I could move the cache to one of the 5260's to validate my theory, but every one of them is working fine. I'm wondering if the cache chip from any other Mac or computer fits the 5260, and if some could be obtained by eBay or otherwise. I'd like to hear from anyone who as added a cache to this model.
